There’s an uncanny power in the bones of our world, gnarled and repurposed.

The Starling Institute preserves a diverse collection of global art from non definitive time periods. We recognize that some portions of our collection have historical ties to communities whose cultures and livelihoods have been adversely affected by settler colonialism and racial capitalism. We also recognize the agency of artists, then and now, to create works that foster beauty, resilience, and independence.

Our founder, Donnie Starling, viewed object making as a path for growing relationships and fostering unity. This principle makes us consider the artifacts housed here as living relatives; we honor them and their ties to past, current, and future peoples. We deeply appreciate all of the stories, triumphs, challenges, and journeys held within these relatives, including the moments of great joy and moments of discomfort.
